Business Incorporation &
Registration

Start your business on a clean foundation. ATS is a licensed CPA firm that incorporates companies federally or in Québec, registers you with the CRA and Revenu Québec, and sets up your GST/QST and payroll accounts — so your books, tax, and compliance are right from day one.

Quick Answer

How do I incorporate a business in Canada or Quebec? You choose federal (Corporations Canada) or provincial (in Québec, the Registraire des entreprises / REQ) incorporation, reserve a name (NUANS or a Québec name search), file articles of incorporation, and then register the corporation’s tax accounts — a CRA Business Number plus GST/HST, QST (Revenu Québec), and payroll accounts as needed. ATS handles the full setup for you as a CPA-led firm, and gets your bookkeeping and tax accounts wired up at the same time.

Incorporate Once, Correctly

Most incorporation headaches come later — a missing GST/QST registration, a payroll account that was never opened, a fiscal year-end chosen without thinking about tax, share structure that boxes you in. Because ATS is a CPA-led accounting firm and not just a filing service, we set your corporation up with the downstream tax and bookkeeping in mind. You get a company that is registered properly, with every government account you actually need open and nothing you don’t.

Why Incorporate With a CPA Firm

Anyone can file articles of incorporation. The value is in what comes next — the tax accounts, the year-end, the share structure, and the books that determine what you actually pay and how smoothly your first year goes. ATS is a licensed CPA firm, a member of the Ordre des CPA du Québec, with Canadian and US CPAs on staff, working in English and French. We’ve helped Canadian businesses for over a decade, and we set up your corporation so it fits the bookkeeping, payroll, and tax work you’ll need after launch.

Once you’re incorporated, ATS keeps everything running: monthly bookkeeping, payroll, GST/QST filing, and tax preparation — all from one Montréal firm serving businesses across Canada. Préférez le français ? Voir l’incorporation d’entreprise.

Incorporation FAQs

Common Questions About Incorporating in Canada

Should I incorporate federally or in Quebec?
It depends on where you operate and plan to grow. Federal incorporation (Corporations Canada) gives you name protection across Canada and is common for businesses operating in more than one province; Québec incorporation through the Registraire des entreprises (REQ) can be simpler if you operate only in Québec. Either way you also register with the REQ to do business in Québec. We’ll recommend the right route in your free consultation.
Do I need to register for GST/QST when I incorporate?
Not always at first — there’s a small-supplier threshold — but many new corporations benefit from registering right away to claim input tax credits/refunds on startup costs. We assess your situation and, if it makes sense, open your GST/HST (CRA) and QST (Revenu Québec) accounts as part of the setup.
Can you incorporate a business for non-residents or US owners?
Yes. We regularly set up Canadian corporations for founders based outside Canada, including US owners, and register the tax accounts. Cross-border ownership has extra tax considerations, which our US and Canadian CPAs handle together — see our cross-border tax service.
What’s the difference between incorporating and just registering a business?
Registering a sole proprietorship or partnership (with the REQ in Québec) is simpler and cheaper, but you and the business are the same legal person. Incorporating creates a separate legal company, which can offer liability protection and tax-planning options like income deferral. We’ll walk you through which fits your goals.
Do you handle the bookkeeping and tax after incorporation?
Yes — that’s the point of incorporating with a CPA firm. We set up your books in QuickBooks or Xero from day one and can handle your monthly bookkeeping, payroll, GST/QST filing, and year-end corporate tax so nothing falls through the cracks in your first year.
